Documenting a Life

His name did not come down to us in our family's oral tradition.  The only branch of the family that actually had a connection back to his name was that branch of Wesley Stafford's descendants who inherited Richard's Family Bible and passed it down generation to generation.  The rest of us had to do some digging!

My great-grandfather's cousin Ted Stafford of Fort Worth, Texas, corresponded with his grandfather's sister Mazie Stafford McNeil in the 1940s.  The letters are lost, but from memory he said, "Our first Stafford ancestor came to the Colonies as one of John Wesley's lay preachers....He came from Great Britain by way of the port of Dublin, and when the Revolution started, he joined the militia and served under General George Washington."

My gggg grandfather Washington Stafford submitted his portrait and biography to The History of Livingston County (Illinois) in 1888, which made the following statement:  "His paternal grandfather, John Stafford, was a native of Belfast Ireland, whence he was brought to this country as a soldier by the British during the Revolutionary War.  He was taken prisoner by the soldiers under Gen. Washington.  He afterward married, and located in Hampshire County, Va., where he reared a family of eight children, all of whom have since passed away."  Since we know now that his grandfather's name was Richard, I have sought to reconcile this statement to other facts.  The best conclusion I have reached is that he confused the names of his grandfathers--Washington's maternal grandfather was John Henry Myer who was at Valley Forge with General Washington's army.  But Washington's daughter Lydia Stafford Shubkagel repeated the story in her own family's story in The History of Marshall County,Kansas, 1888.

Bernita Barney Chance of Olathe, Kansas, great-great granddaughter of Washington Stafford, wrote in 2003:  "I wrote the authorities in England and have a letter stating that the was sentenced to be hung for robbery, but was given the opportunity to serve in the army for 14 years instead, was taken prisoner by Washington's men.  My genealogy instructor advised he was probably one of the group which was marched to the governor of New York who rejected the prisoners as he had no facilities to house or feed them, he advised them to march them to Virginia where they were also refused, then the guards just faded away.  When the war ended, anyone could become a citizen by declaring allegiance."

Richard Emberson Stafford, a member of the Washington descendants of Francis Asbury Stafford through his son William Josephus Stafford and grandson Charles Montgomery Stafford, wrote this to me in 2011:  Many years ago, a relative of mine, now deceased, told me that my branch of the Stafford family came from Wexford County, Ireland.  At the time I was not interested and I didn't ask him how he knew that."  A little investigation showed that the largest concentration of Staffords in Ireland is in Wexford County, making the claim at least credible.

The family of Waldo G.W. Stafford, a descendant of Wesley Stafford, who presently has the Family Bible, maintained the tradition that Richard Stafford was a Methodist preacher.

But aside from those private oral traditions, there is a good amount of written documentation for the life of our immigrant ancestor Richard Stafford.

The best, I think, is the Family Bible.  Currently in the possession of Rita Stafford Fawcett of Winter Haven, Florida, it was purchased by Richard Stafford in 1804, and the family records of his marriage to Catharine Brobeker and the births of their children were written by his own hand.

Proof

This climb up the Stafford family tree has taught me a lot about genealogy, stuff I wish I had known thirty years ago when I started.  I had a close friend whose mother was a genealogist, and she encouraged my interest, giving me advice that has helped me to this day.  It's all because of her that I can tell the difference between Jesse and Ieppe in a census record!

I collected a lot of names and dates without a single concern for proof.  I gathered data, not documents.  I went for the impressive ancestral chart without regard to the evidence for said lineage.  I have since learned that is not the way to do real genealogy research.  Real research takes time and exacting effort.  It takes hours going through a multiplicity of records, so that one can reach an informed conclusion about the ancestors.  Regarding The Stafford Genealogical Project, the primary focus of my genealogical attentions for more than two decades, I have tried to be much more careful than my earlier days of research.  I've tried to document everything.

So consider my lineage.  Even though I knew my great-grandfather until I was 17, and he was 20 years old when his own grandfather died, I've taken nothing for granted.

I have my own birth certificate, showing my parents as Bryan Lynn Stafford and Donna Gail Huckins.  There are multiple personal records repeating the date and place and circumstances of my birth, including pictures of the day I was born.  Details of my birth and early years are recorded in my mother's handwriting in my Baby Book, as well as in my grandmother's Bible.

I have my father's birth certificate that shows his parents as Francis Lynn Stafford and Olga June Beighle.  Details of his birth were recorded by his mother in a Baby Book which I have in possession, and by his grandmother in her Bible.

I have my grandfather's birth certificate and baby book, showing his parents as Lewis Jackson Stafford and Charlene Fayblane Guynes.  The 1940 Census shows their household in Wheeler County, Texas, with my grandfather Lynn shown as a son of Jack and Charlene.  I have my great-grandfather's will listing my grandfather as his son and heir.

I have my great-grandfather's birth certificate--issued when he was an adult based on the sworn testimony of his mother, stating that his parents were Francis Marion Stafford and Clare Desmond Jackson.  I have the 1910 & 1920 Census that show him as a son in their home.

I have a certified copy of the marriage license of Frank & Des Jackson Stafford.  I have the 1880 & 1900 Census that show Frank as a son in the home of his parents, James & Katherine Hartman Stafford.  I have copies of the Bible records and personal diary of James Stafford which give a list of his children with their dates of birth.

I have firsthand accounts from several of James & Katherine's grandchildren who knew them, testifying to their names, dates of birth and death.  And the same Bible records and diary give the biographical information for James and Katherine as well.  I have a copy of their marriage license, as well as a copy of James' discharge from the Union Army in 1865.  When he enlisted in 1862, he gave his age as 19, which confirms and 1843 year of birth, and his place of birth as Hampshire County, Virginia.  I also have the 1850, 1860 & 1870 Census that show James (once as William, his middle name) in the home of his parents Washington and Elizabeth Lickliter Stafford.

I have letters from my great-grandfather's cousin Ted Stafford, who recalled letters he had received from his grandfather James' youngest sister Mazie Stafford McNeil identifying her father as Washington Stafford.  I have a biography of Washington Stafford published in the History of Livingston County, Illinois, in 1888, which gives dates of birth for his wife and himself, the names of their parents--Joseph & Elizabeth Myer Stafford in his case, George & Rosa Cook Lickliter in hers--and siblings, and a history of their migration from the homeplace in Hampshire County, Virginia, to Zanesville, Ohio, and finally to Livingston County, Illinois.

I have a statement from my great-grandfather's cousin Lucy Stafford Killette that confirms Joseph Stafford was our ancestor.  Since census records before 1850 have no names besides the Head of Household, all that can be confirmed in 1830 & 1840 is that Joseph Stafford of Hampshire county had a son in the right age range to be Washington, but since Joseph is the only one of his generation who remained in Hampshire County to raise a family, there is no reason to doubt that Washington was his oldest son.

Finally, though we had enough circumstantial evidence to assume Joseph S. Stafford was the son of Richard Stafford of Hampshire County, Virginia, I finally obtained copies of four original documents that either imply or outright state that it is so.

First, I have copies and transcriptions of Richard & Catharine Brobeker Stafford's family Bible, purchased in 1804, recording their marriage, the births of all of their children, marriages for some of their children, births for some of their grandchildren, and dates of death for them and a few other family members.

Secondly, I have the estate papers of Richard Stafford, dated 1808-1812, showing Joseph Stafford and several of his brothers buying items from their father's estate.

Thirdly, I have the will of Catharine Stafford dated 1810 naming her youngest two children--Washington & Sarah--and witnessed by her two sons John F. & Joseph S. Stafford.

Finally, I have the Chancery Court papers that include two sworn statements of Joseph Stafford listing his siblings in the order of their birth and naming them as children of Richard and Catharine Stafford.

So I can say with documented proof that this is my lineage.  From that solid foundation and using the same process, I have traced the five branches of Richard's children to the present day.

How Did You Find Me?

I've been climbing my family tree for thirty years, now.  I've collected a lot of information from other researchers through the years, tracing the various branches of my ancestors back through the centuries.  For most of those branches I found other genealogists who had already done the intensive research.  When I found a connecting ancestor, they were always more than happy to share their work.

Three separate works have been done regarding my Mother's New England Huckins family--1881, 1916, and 1989.  My maternal grandmother's mother's family were Mormons who had diligently traced much of their ancestry because of the dictates of their faith, so a full eighth of my genealogy was done with no contribution of my own.  My  paternal mother's family was full of genealogists on both sides who left much of their work available for posterity's sake.  My great-grandmother Stafford was born a Guynes, and anyone who carries the name is related to us, because it was a made-up spelling--I suspect the first man to use it was trying to get away from his very colorful past--but researchers from that family had an EBB back in the early days of the world wide web.

But of my many ancestral lines, I found no one who had fully traced the Staffords.  Some had an interest, a passing curiosity.  I knew many of my great-grandfather's cousins who had long, sharp memories and willingly shared everything they knew.  But no one had tackled the task until I started connecting the various distant branches to the same trunk, amassing a 7000-page printed document contained in 18 large, three-ring binders.  Who knows how many pages it would be if I added all the digital information I have never printed.  I have about 500 printed pages of documentation on our immigrant ancestor Richard Stafford alone.

I've visited lots of libraries, court houses, and cemeteries.  I've met distant cousins all over the country, and corresponded with even more.  For the last twenty years, I've been grateful for the advent of the Internet and its many genealogical sites.  It has made tracing the family from its origins in Hampshire County, Virginia, circa 1800 to the mid-1940s simple.  With census records online for those years, and now more birth, marriage, death, and burial information online, with discussion boards and collaborative sites like findagrave.com, the search for the dead is made easy.  The search for the living, however, takes a little more detective work.

Phone books, 411, and the white pages online put me in touch with descendants.  I don't remember how many phone calls I made, spontaneous introductions through Ma Bell (this was before cellphones) that led me to many wonderful connections.  Message boards like those found at rootsweb and genforum led me to more.  Obituaries for the more recently deceased filled in whole families on the tree.  And, of course, the social networking that is Facebook.  Over 300 Staffords and kin are part of our Facebook group, many of them also my Facebook friends, almost every one of them contacted through whatever means the ever-changing settings of Facebook will allow, and they graciously responded to my introduction and requests for information on their families.  What might be even more surprising is I have sent hundreds, if not thousands, more messages and friend requests than have been answered.

So when I'm asked the question, "How did you find me?"--as I frequently am--the story goes something like this.

From one of Richard Stafford's children, I traced the family through the census, through county birth and marriage records, through family researchers and publications, down to the mid-20th Century.  There are lots of folks recorded in the 1940 census who are still alive, or have only recently died.  For the living ones I found addresses and phone numbers.  For those who have passed on, I looked for obituaries that listed their survivors, and repeated the process.  Facebook is so popular, with settings now that allow one to list their family relationships, I have gleaned lots of biographical and genealogical information from hundreds of walls.  I wrote messages, sent friend requests, and waited for replies.

Through those methods, I have contacted living descendants in all five of the branches of Richard's children that I have traced; three more lines have yet to be identified in the historical records of the early 1800s.  And using those methods still, the search continues.  This latest trip through the family tree has taken me the last three years, and is about 80% complete.  I'm hoping I can finish by the end of this year.

But if you ever wonder, "How did he find me?" let me assure you, it wasn't easy!
